When Is The Best Time Of Year To Go Ice Fishing?

The best time to go ice fishing in Casper, Wyoming is from mid December through February when the lakes are frozen over and the fish are active. March is also a very popular month for me however, it’s important to keep an eye on the weather conditions. Avoid going out on the ice if the temperature rises above freezing. This can cause the ice to become unstable and unsafe. The two times of the day when the fish are the most actively feeding are from sunrise for the first 2 hours and for 2 hours both before and after sunset.

What Do I Need To Go Ice Fishing?

When it comes to gear, having the right equipment is essential for a successful ice fishing trip. I believe good flexible to mid-stiffness ice fishing rods, smooth reels, and sturdy line are a must, along with an ice auger to drill holes in the ice. Ice cleats will give you the traction needed while fishing on very slippery ice. An ice fishing shelter is also helpful for staying warm. Additionally, a depth finder and an underwater camera are beneficial to me for locating fish.

How To Dress For Ice Fishing

Dressing appropriately is key to enjoying a comfortable and safe ice fishing experience. Rocky Mountain Discount Sports in Casper is the place I get my outer wear. The importance of layering can’t be expressed enough, as the temperature on the ice can be much colder than on land. I recommend thermal underwear, wool shirts, and pants, and a heavy winter coat to protect against harsh winds. It is also important to wear insulated boots that are waterproof. Also wool socks, gloves, and a hat to keep extremities warm.

What Is The Best Bait To use While Ice Fishing?

For bait, live bait such as sucker minnows, fathead minnows, shiners, chubs, and night crawlers are my favorite options. Trout and Walleye tend to find them irresistible. Alternatively, jigs or lures that mimic small fish, grubs, or insects can also be effective. Sloan’s General Store in Alcova is my favorite go to shop. It’s important to choose bait that matches the diet of the type of fish you are targeting. Vary your presentation to find out what works best.
